Chinese-taught Undergraduate Foundation Program (School of Chinese Language and Literature)

This foundation program serves as a critical bridging platform for students to smoothly transition into undergraduate studies at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU). It aims to help students comprehensively improve their overall Chinese proficiency and foundational academic competence, ensuring they are fully prepared for Chinese-taught undergraduate majors. Upon successful completion of the program and passing the required assessments, students will be eligible for direct admission to corresponding undergraduate programs in the School of Chinese Language and Literature. Those who meet the application requirements of other schools at BFSU may also receive recommendations to apply for relevant majors, enabling a seamless start to their academic journey at the university.


Program Overview

Target Students

This program is designed for international students who do not yet meet the Chinese language proficiency requirements for direct entry into Chinese-taught undergraduate programs, and wish to gain admission to undergraduate studies by passing the Chinese and Mathematics sections of the China College Student Admission Assessment (hereinafter referred to as CSCA).

Program Duration

  • 1 semester (for non-beginner level students)

  • 1 academic year (for beginner level students)

Direct Admission to Undergraduate Programs in the School of Chinese Language and Literature

Students who complete all teaching components specified in the curriculum, achieve passing grades, and pass the CSCA examination will be eligible for direct admission to undergraduate programs in the School of Chinese Language and Literature. Selected undergraduate courses in the School are open to foundation program students; credits earned through successful completion of these courses may be transferred to the undergraduate phase of study.

Eligibility for Progression to Other Schools at BFSU

Students who complete all teaching components specified in the curriculum, achieve passing grades, and meet the application requirements of other schools at BFSU may receive recommendations to apply for programs offered by those schools. For detailed information, please refer to the admission brochures published by each school.


Core Courses

  • Foundational Chinese Courses

    Students will take a Chinese placement test upon enrollment and be assigned to classes based on their proficiency level, with small-class teaching adopted. Each class includes integrated training in listening, speaking, reading, and writing to fully develop students’ four key language skills.

  • Mathematics Course

    Delivered in accordance with the CSCA Mathematics examination syllabus.

  • Elective Courses

    First-year undergraduate electives offered by the School of Chinese Language and Literature, including Chinese Pronunciation, Chinese Vocabulary, and General Knowledge of Chinese Culture, are open to foundation program students.


Application Requirements

  1. Citizens of foreign countries who hold valid ordinary passports (non-Chinese nationality).

  2. Full-time high school graduates or holders of equivalent academic qualifications.


Tuition Fees

Tuition: 12,000 RMB per semester; 24,000 RMB per academic year.

(Excluding fees for CSCA and HSK tests)


Application Procedures

  1. Online Application

    • Log in to the BFSU International Student Online Service System (https://study.bfsu.edu.cn), register an account, fill in personal information, upload required documents, and submit the application.

    • Application Path: Self-financed Students → Foundation Students → University Foundation Program (School of Chinese Language and Literature)

  2. Required Application Documents

    1. Copy of the passport main page (applicants already in China must also submit a copy of their valid Chinese visa).

    2. Copy of high school graduation certificate or pre-graduation certificate. If the original document is not in Chinese or English, a certified Chinese or English translation must be submitted. (Students currently enrolled in a Chinese university must additionally submit an enrollment certificate and a consent letter for transfer/withdrawal from their current institution.)

    3. Copy of full high school transcript. If the original document is not in Chinese or English, a certified Chinese or English translation must be submitted. (Students currently enrolled in a Chinese university must submit their official transcript from the current institution.)

    4. Personal Statement (download the template from the application website; must be completed in Chinese or English).

    5. Student Commitment Letter (download the template from the application website; must be hand-signed in Chinese or English, then scanned and uploaded).

    6. Sponsor’s Guarantee Letter (download the template from the application website; must be hand-signed in Chinese or English, then scanned and uploaded).

    7. Copy of the emergency contact’s (usually the applicant’s father or mother) ID card or passport.

    8. Two letters of recommendation: one must be from a teacher or homeroom teacher at the applicant’s high school; the second may be from a recommender of the applicant’s choice, with no specific rank requirement.

    9. Passport-style photo with a white background.

    10. Application fee of 800 RMB (to be paid directly through the online application system after submission. Applications without the application fee will not be processed. The application fee is non-refundable regardless of admission results).

    11. Optional supporting documents (copies accepted): SAT/IB/A-Level/ACT transcripts, national college entrance exam results, award certificates, HSK score reports, other Chinese language proficiency certificates, or any other materials deemed helpful to the application.

  • The university reserves the right to request additional documents from applicants, or to conduct further assessments or interviews as needed.
