Founded in 2000, National Research Centre for Foreign Language Education is a key research base for Education Humanities and Social Sciences of Ministry of Education and the main unit ofForeign linguistics and Applied Linguisticsin Beijing Foreign Studies University. At present, there are 14 full-time researchers and 3 part-time researchers. The Centre is a national training base for talents in the field of foreign language research and education. It recruits about 45 students including master program students, PhD program students and postdoctoral fellows every year.
The Centre is engaged in three basic research subjects in the field of linguistics: 1) the theoretical and practical innovation of Chinese foreign language education; 2) the contrastive study of Chinese and foreign languages and the study of foreign language learners and their learning; 3) the study of foreign languages and foreign language learning based on mega-data. In this framework, six research directions are set up: theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, corpus linguistics, language policy and planning, contrastive study between English and Chinese, and foreign language education.
Program Characteristics
1.By studying here, you will become foreign language proficient. You will be equipped with fluent foreign language skills and comprehensive foreign language knowledge, and you will understand the basic theories and latest progress of the discipline and related directions.
2.You will adopt a rigorous scientific attitude, and master basic research methods. Learners should abide by academic ethics and norms, thereby laying a solid foundation for studying for doctoral degree in related disciplines.
3.By studyingtheoretical linguistics, you can acquire knowledge of linguistic theories andcapabilities in linguistic analysis and research.
4.By studying applied linguistics (including foreign language education), you will be able to teach foreign languages and carry out research concerning language teaching.
5.By studying corpus linguistics, you willgain the mastery of corpus collection, processing and analysis, relevant technologies and programming capabilities.
6.By studying English-Chinese comparison and translation, youare supposed to understand the main similarities and differences between English and Chinese. You will be able to do English-Chinese and Chinese-English translation, and to do comparative researches between English and Chinese.
7.Studying language policy and planning can enable you to do academic research in the field of macro and micro language policy.
8.After finishing the program, you willbe competent for jobs concerning language research and teaching, foreign affairs and management in enterprises. You can also work in offices, educational departments, scientific and technological departments, etc.

Chinese-based Program
With one supervisor or a group of supervisorsbeing responsible for each student’s study, the program combines core courses for all directions with required and optional courses in each direction. At the same time, students are encouraged to participate in social practice and academic activities so that they cankeep step with the latest research in particular fields.
