School of Asian Studies
Introduction
Founded in 1961, the School of Asian and African Studies of BFSU (previously named as “Department of Asian and African Languages”) is well known for its teaching and research specialties in Asian and African Languages and Literature, Asian and African Area Studies and Translation Theory & Practice. In September 2019, the School of Asian Studies was founded after the School of Asian and African Studies was expanded to be the School of Asian Studies and the School of African Studies. Currently, the School of Asian Studies offers 24 foreign language programs for Bachelor’s Degrees, including Korean, Thai, Malay, Turkish, etc. Among these, Georgian is a new major added in 2025. As one of the oldest and largest schools among all the Foreign Languages Universities in the country, the School of Asian Studies has already made the declaration for 30 Asian Languages on the record.
Approved by the Ministry of Education, the National Non-Common Languages Undergraduate Personnel Training Bases was established at the Department of Asian and African Languages in 2001, and incorporated into the “The Project of Higher Education Reform in the New Century”. In April 2007, approved by the Ministry of Education and the Beijing Municipal Government, the School of Asian and African Studies became the characteristic specialty key department for Higher Education in the same year.
Up to now, the School of Asian Studies has established several Academic Research and Cultural Exchange Organizations, including the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, the Center for South Asian Studies, the China Malaysian Studies Center, the Center for Vietnamese Studies, the Center for Iran Studies, the Center for Cambodian Studies, the Center for Laos Studies and the Center for Indian Studies, which are recognized as national and regional research centers by the Ministry of Education. In addition, there are also research centers such as the Indonesia Center, the Center for DPRK(ROK) Studies, the Nepal Studies Center, the Center for Sri Lankan Studies, the Sirindhorn Institute of Language and Culture and so on. The School also publishes Academic Journals, including the Journal of Asian and African Studies, etc.
Faculty
The School of Asian Studies has a team of professional faculty. They are not only with rich teaching experiences, but also enthusiastic about the career in non-common languages teaching. Currently, there are more than 70 Chinese teachers in the School, of which 45% are Professors and Associate Professors, and 80% own Doctoral Degrees in the areas of Asian Languages and Literature, Political Science, Philosophy, Law, History, Arts and many other research fields. Each year, the School recruits over 20 foreign experts to teach relevant majors, and invites several Chinese or Overseas Scholars to serve as visiting professors and discipline consultants. The school actively engages itself in multi-level and comprehensive international cooperation and exchange, establishing collaborative relationships with over 20 renowned universities and academic institutions in Asia, Europe and the Americas.
