School of Asian Studies

Introduction

Founded in 1961, School of Asian and African Studies of BFSU (previously named as “Department of Asian and African Languages”) is well known for its teaching and research specialties in Asian and African Languages and Literature, Asian and African Area Studies and Translation Theory & Practice. In September 2019, School of Asian Studies was founded after School of Asian and African Studies was expanded to be School of Asian Studies and School of African Studies. Currently, School of Asian Studies offers 23 foreign language programs for Bachelor Degrees, including Korean, Thai, Malay, Turkish, and etc. As one of the oldest and largest schools among all the Foreign Languages Universities over the country, School of Asian Studies has already made the declaration for 30 Asian Languages on the record.

Approved by The Ministry of Education, the National Non-Common Languages Undergraduate Personnel Training Bases was established at the Department of Asian and African Languages in 2001, and incorporated into the “The Project of Higher Education Reform in the New Century”. In April 2007, approved by The Ministry of Education and the Beijing Municipal Government, School of Asian and African Studies became the characteristic specialty key department for Higher Education at the same year.

Up to now, School of Asian Studies has established several Academic Research and Cultural Exchange Organizations, including Center for ROK And DPRK Studies, Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Center For South Asian Studies, Center For West Asian Studies, Center for Sri Lankan Studies, Indonesia Center, Center for Iranian Culture, Center for Vietnamese Studies, Center for Khmer Studies, Center for Lao Studies, and etc. The School also publishes Academic Journals including Journal of Asian and African Studies, and etc.

Faculty

School of Asian Studies owns a group of professional faculties. They are not only with rich teaching experiences, but also enthusiastic about the career in non-common languages teaching. Currently, there are more than 70 Chinese teachers in the School, where 40% of them are Professors and Associate Professors; 75% of them own Doctoral Degrees in the areas of Asian Languages and Literature, Political Science, Philosophy, Law, History, Arts and many other research fields. Each year, the School recruits over 20 foreign experts to teach relevant majors, and invites several Chinese or Overseas Scholars to serve as visiting professors and discipline consultants.

2. Asian and African Area Studies

Research Direction: Southeast Asia Area Studies, South Asia Area Studies

3. MTI: Korean-Chinese Interpreting

Study Period

2 years for MTI; 3 years for others

Requirements

1. With Bachelor Degree or Above

2. HSK Level 5, scores over 180

10. Detailed Research Plan (1500 words or over in Chinese or the taught language of your program)

11. Visa page (for applicants currently studying in a university in China)
