School of German Studies

Beijing Foreign Studies University began offering German language courses in March 1950, and our German Department has since received state recognition for academic excellence. In 2002, the Department’s German Language and Literature Program was designated as a National Key Discipline by the State Council’s Office for Academic Degrees. In 2008, the Department was listed as a faculty with Distinguished National Degree offerings. The German Department was renamed SchoolofGermanStudiesin 2019.

School of German Studies currently has33members of staff, including29faculty members.

Our international partner institutions include Heidelberg University, the University of Göttingen, Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the University of Passau, the SDI München and the University of Vienna. Each year, we send students and faculty members to our partner institutions on study and exchange programs, and also admit international students to our degree courses. School of German Studies has collaborated with Nanjing University and the University of Göttingen to offer a joint master’s program in Intercultural German Studies. Upon successful completion of the program, students graduate with degrees from both the Chinese and German universities. We have also partnered with the Institute for the German Language (IDS) and the University of Mannheim to offer joint PhD programs.

Courses offered in Chinese / German

Majors offered under our German Language and Literature Program at the undergraduate level include German Literature, German Linguistics, Translation Studies, Intercultural Studies, German Foreign Policy and German Economics.

Our undergraduate program is designed to produce competent, well-rounded graduates with strong interdisciplinary skills, who can contribute to the future development of their society. We take a student centric approach to education, and our curriculums are tailored to allow students to fulfill both their academic pursuits and individual interests. Building on the foundational curriculum taught in the first and second years, we introduce a dynamic and diversified course structure at third and fourth year level. All third and fourth year subjects are divided into introductory and advanced streams, and students are able to select their compulsory subjects from 4 of 6 modules (Literature, Linguistics, Translation Studies, Intercultural Studies, Foreign Policy and Economics) based on their interests and career path requirements.
