School of African Studies

History

In the early 1960s, according to the first Premier Zhou Enlai’s suggestions, the Department of Asian and African Languages at BFSU was founded in a mission to strengthen the friendly exchanges with countries and regions in Asia and Africa. Since then, the school has established the Swahili, Hausa and isiZulu majors, working on teaching and researching the African languages and personnel training.

In September 2019, the School of African Studies was founded to facilitate and improve the teaching of African non-common languages and area studies on African regions and countries. Now, the school is authorized to grant the Bachelor degree for 20 African languages. There are four departments, i.e. Department of Swahili, Department of Hausa, Department of Zulu and Department of Amharic, which offer Swahili, Hausa, Zulu and Amharic as a bachelor major respectively. The school also offers a number of African languages as a third additional language course, such as Kinyarwanda, Somali, Shona and Sesotho. There is also one research center, i. e. Center on African Studies, which focuses on Area Studies on African countries and regions. The school has established academic cooperation and exchange with over 16 African colleges and universities, and several world-renowned African Studies institutes including School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (SOAS) and Institut National Des Languages Et Civilisation Orientales (INALCO).
