On November 21, over 20 international students from Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) attended the thematic event “Borderless Craftsmanship: International Youth Intangible Heritage Fair”. This journey immersed them in the unique charm of China’s intangible cultural heritage and helped them further understand how China’s rich traditions closely relate to its modern-day development in the new era.

Exploring the Tradition and Innovation of Chinese Arts at National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts

On the morning, the international students visited the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, where they took a guided tour into the Academy’s teaching facilities and distinctive courses, and experienced the profound heritage of traditional Chinese opera through interactive sessions. By enjoying Chinese opera performances and learning about the cultural meanings behind the characters, the students got to gain a deeper understanding of the formalized style of Chinese opera and see how it has integrated itself with modern arts.

Experiencing Craftsmanship and Cultural Legacy through Hands-on Activities

On the afternoon, the international students went to the Yicheng International Center, where they experienced six forms of traditional craftsmanship, including face painting, Chinese knot weaving, fan making, snuff bottle painting, cloisonné enamel, and traditional folk magic through interactions. As they talked face to face with the masters of these traditional crafts, the students not only learned hands-on skills, but also deepened understanding of the historical and cultural value behind these crafts.

By experiencing traditional craftsmanship first hand, the international students were able to feel the rich history behind China’s intangible cultural heritage and see how it is being revitalized in the new era through constant innovation. The event gave visibility to Chinese government’s efforts to protect and inherit the intangible cultural heritage and the role it plays in cross-cultural communication, notably in a globalized context.

BFSU has always been dedicated to providing international students with opportunities for social practice and cultural exchange. In the future, it will continue to create new ways for international students to recognize and understand China, contributing to closer connections among people worldwide.
