On September 19th, 2017, China (Anyang) International Conference of Chinese Characters, co-organized by Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and Henan People’s Government, was held in National Museum of Chinese Writing in Anyang. World-renowned experts on Chinese characters, Chinese scholars and foreign students gathered together to discuss the development of Chinese character and appreciate its unique charm.
The Conference organized activities like scholar seminar, inviting experts to campus and visits. On the evening of September 20th, “Oracle Cup” International Publuic Speaking Competition was held. Ten candidates reached final competition. They came from Malaysia, Thailand, Cameroon, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Italy and Sweden. They competed on the topic “My Story with Chinese Characters”.
BFSU considers this competition as a great opportunity to show excellent international Chinese teaching of BFSU and to display the image of overseas students in BFSU. Coordinated by Office of Academic Research and Confucius Institute, a preparation committee for the competition was set up with Professor Chen Xiaoming as director and Meng Dehong, Xia Jing and Jiang Shujun as academic and competition tutors.
After rounds of selection and careful preparation, five representatives were chosen to represent BFSU for the competition. They are Komatsu, Son Jeong Eun, Xu Manwen, Wei Mingrui and Lai Xi from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Sweden and Italy respectively. After fierce competition, our contestants bagged top three awards–one first prize and two second prizes, winning honors for BFSU and receiving compliment from experts and judges.
Director and Professor Zhang Zhaoyi from Office of Academic Research and Professor and Dean of School of Chinese Language and Literature Wei Chongxin made comments about the competition on behalf of all experts and delivered passionate speeches.
Tencent Video broadcasted it live and over 300,000 audiences watched it. Several major media outlets including People’s Daily, people.com.cn, chinanews.com, dahe.cn, sina.com.cn, Henan Daily and Anyang Daily covered the conference and competition. (From School of Chinese Language and Literature)
