School of Russian

History

School of Russian was formerly founded in 1941 as the Russian Language Team in the Third Branch of the Yan’an-based Chinese People’s Anti-Japanese Military and Political College. The Russian Language Team grew into Beijing Russian Language School in 1949. The school was later renamed as the Beijing Russian Institute in 1955 and merged with Beijing Foreign Languages Institute in 1959 when the Russian Language Department was established. Later, Beijing Foreign Languages Institute was also renamed, becoming Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) in 1994. The then Russian Language Department developed into School of Russian studies in 1996.

Nowadays, the school has three teaching levels of bachelor, master, and doctor and has postdoctoral programs. Its Russian Language and Literature became one of the first batch of master’s degrees authorized to confer in 1981 across the country. It was authorized to confer doctoral degrees in 1986 and set up postdoctoral programs in 1996. In 2002, School of Russian became an academic institute with key disciplines in Beijing. As a part of “Linguistics and Applied Linguistics” of BFSU, the school was granted the academic institute with the national key disciplines in 2007. In 2019, its Russian major was listed in the first batch of national first-class undergraduate majors.

The School provides 4-year undergraduate programs, 2 or 3 years of master’s programs, and 3-year doctoral programs. It offers eight foreign language courses for undergraduate students: Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Kazakh, Uzbek, Tajiki, Kyrgyz, and Turkmen. The later seven majors adopt the education program of Russian plus 1 non-common foreign language. The academic programs for master’s degrees at the School of Russian include Russian Linguistics, Russian Literature, Russian Society & Culture, MTI (Russian-Chinese Translation and Interpreting), and Regional Studies of the universities associated with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
