History

School of Arabic Studies was first established as the Arabic Language Program in China Foreign Affairs University in 1958. In 1962, the Arabic Language Program was merged into Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) as one part of the Asian-African Language Department. In 1981, the Arabic Language Program was separated from the Department, becoming the Arabic Department. In 2015, the Arabic Department was renamed the School of Arabic Studies. The School started to offer China’s first master degree and doctor degree for Arabic Language and Literature in 1981 and 1986 respectively. In 1992, it was approved to set up postdoctoral programs in BFSU. Its Arabic program was listed as a key discipline in Beijing in 2002. Its teaching faculty was granted the excellent teaching team of Beijing in 2008. In 2019, the School was listed as a national first-class undergraduate program and municipal first-class program in Beijing.

The School has three teaching levels of bachelor, master, and doctor with postdoctoral programs receiving doctoral graduates both from home and abroad every year. The School provides 4-year undergraduate programs, 2 or 3 years of master’s programs, and 3-year doctoral programs. The academic programs includeArabic Language & Translation, Arabic Literature, Regional Studies of the Arab World, Arabic Interpretation (Simultaneous Interpreting included), and so forth.

Teaching Faculty

School of Arabic Studies has 15 teachers, with a reasonable structure in age and academic relationship and a high level of academic qualifications. Among them, there are 4 professors, 4 associate professors, and 7 lecturers. 13 teachers have doctoral degrees.
